9 Loafers We Actually Want to Buy This Fall

Loafers are the ultimate everyday shoes, thanks to their practical design and wearability. They are both timeless and nonchalantly cool, which makes a strong case for having at least one pair in your rotation. As the air gets cooler and “back to school” signs start to populate store windows, this may be the season when I finally give in to the trend.

Although I don’t fully identify with the preppy aesthetic, there is something undoubtedly smart about the look of loafers. In fact, I wore them a lot in high school, along with the Sperry boat shoes (we all go through a preppy phase, no?) Loafers walk the line between conservative and approachable, but no matter what they are paired with — denim and button-downs or trousers and blazers — they convey easy style and attitude. Since my go-to kitten heels won’t receive as much mileage in the fall, loafers may take their place for everyday errands, casual office days, and laidback hangs.

While they are known to be practical, not all loafers are easy to walk in. I have heard from several influencer friends that the ubiquitous Prada versions are bulky, uncomfortable and blister-causing. On the other hand, some run either too large or small, or feature soles so thin you might as well go barefoot. With these factors in mind, I researched a few pairs that are affordable, practical, and customer-approved. From a simple and classic style to a disco-inspired pair, embrace the smart casual look with these cool loafers.

Free People Liv Penny Loafer

Between its rich green shade and the brass detailing, could the Liv Penny Loafer ($128) be any more polished? Try pairing it with an all-black outfit for a fun pop of color or go bold with different shades of green. The color may seem intimidating, but it’ll definitely make a statement wherever you go. Just in time for the fall season, make this loafer your go-to for casual errands and early afternoon meetings alike.

Sam Edelman Loraine Bit Loafer

This is the pair for any look and any occasion. Inspired by (or downright replicating) the iconic Alesandro Michele design, the Loraine Bit loafer ($150) offers a budget-friendly solution for everyday wear. It comes in multiple prints and fabric, but you can’t go wrong with this minimal and timeless black leather choice. Pair them with trousers for a day at the office then transition them to afterwork drinks.

Ganni Block-Heel Loafers

For a more fashion-forward style, the Ganni Block-heel loafers ($383) are the way to go.  While the main event is the beautiful jewel detail, other design details stand out just as much, including the square block heel. The crystal embellishment is just the cherry on top; beyond the glam, these are practical shoes made for the everyday.

Dolce Vita Erna Wide Flats

For a practical shoe that packs just a little bit of glam, the Dolce Vita Erna Loafer ($120) fits the bill. The golden hardware makes it best suited for evening activities, but you can totally get away with running around the city in them during the day. The frills add that extra element of fun. If you’re feeling bold, wear them with black or white socks and an A-line dress for an edgy themed party. Be sure to size up when purchasing.

Reformation Agathea Chunky Loafers

Why go for a timeless classic when you can make it retro? This is what the Reformation loafers ($268) seem to say. A cool take on the preppy shoe, it has just enough elevation (with the 35mm heel) plus a padded footbed to give you comfortable support. Wear it with your favorite pair of jeans or poplin maxi dress, and you’ll have a bit of pep in your step.

Everlane Italian Leather Day Loafer

Your everyday shoes don’t always need to make a statement as long as they’re functional. Enter The Everlane Italian Leather Day Loafer ($145). Featuring an easy slip-on silhouette and a modern square toe, it’s a loafer made for running errands, grabbing coffee with a friend, and keeping a low profile. Made in a seemingly soft Nappa leather, this is a no-frill, wear-everywhere pair.

Allsaints Sole Penny Loafer

For a budget-friendly version of the Prada loafers (if you’re into Chelsea boots or the chunky loafer look), these AllSaints Lola Loafers ($289) may be the ones. Founded by designer couple Kait Bolongaro and Stuart Trevor in 1994, the brand infuses a rock 'n' roll sensibility to every design, which clearly shows through these loafers. They make a cool collegiate pair that works just as well with jeans and plaid blazers for class as with ankle-length denim and biker jackets for a concert.
