Since signing up for a pilates class earlier this spring, I have worn every single workout set I own. Admittedly, they were at times the sole motivation for getting on the train at 8 am. Yes, I’m one of those people who instantly feel energized when they put on cute workout clothes. While I’m nowhere near mastering those intense pilates moves, I’ve learned a lot about workout fabrics and the types that are conducive to great workouts. Sure, fun prints and sleek designs always get my attention, but when shopping for new sets, I now also pay attention to the material composition.

First and foremost, a stretchy fabric is key, because who can do single-leg circles in tight-fitting leggings? Secondly, it also has to be moisture-wicking as sweating is an inevitable part of working out, and you’d want your clothes to dry quickly. This is why most workout clothes are made from elastane, poly-blends and other synthetic materials as natural fibers don’t easily contain these properties. Last but not least, the feel of the fabric is paramount. The end-result should not—under any circumstances—be itchy. As you will interact with the clothes throughout your workout, they should feel almost as if you’re wearing a second skin.

From a neutral gingham set that lends itself to summer workouts to tried-and-true classics for everyday wear, explore this curation of workout sets for jogging, pilates, cardio, and everything else.

P.E Nation Set

When it comes to workout sets, you can count on P.E Nation to bring an edge. The Australian brand has been changing the activewear industry since 2016, taking a streetwear-inspired approach to its designs. This Courtside Sports Bra ($109) is a great example. Designed for low-impact activities such as yoga and pilates, it provides the right amount of support with its waist band paneling and medium compression fabric. Meanwhile, the leggings ($119) boast a color-blocking pattern and logo patch for an undeniably cool effect.

Who doesn’t love an interesting neckline? Minimal with a twist, the Le Ore ($169) set is fun to look at. The cross-shoulder bra construction is an unexpectedly fun detail, while the biker shorts mirror the cool pattern. Paired together, they make an easy reach for summer workouts. And if you decide to walk around town after, add on a white button-down and make it a convincing summer uniform.

The SculptFlex Bra Top ($68) is designed to enhance your curves while providing the necessary support for your workout. The chest cutout amps up the sex appeal, while the long sleeve still provides plenty of coverage for those chilly rooftop workouts. Alo Yoga Set

When it comes to workout sets, the funkier the patterns the more fun I have wearing them. Who said you had to stick to traditional colors? The Alo Yoga Gingham Splendor Bra ($68) and Biker Shorts ($68) blend style and functionality pretty well (let the compliments roll in!) I particularly love how lightweight the fabric looks, which is ideal for packing in your suitcase. Stay cool and look good in this summer number.

Adidas by Stella McCartney

This Adidas set by Stella McCartney is perfect for that awkward in-between season. The TrueStrength Seamless Yoga Top ($84) works well with breezy days with its open back detail and cropped length. Pair it with the matching high-waisted leggings ($98).  I’m a huge fan of high-waist anything because not only does it perk up your booty, but it also elongates your legs.

Outdoor Voices Set

You can’t talk about the fitness industry (as we know it today) without mentioning the impact of Outdoor Voices. Founder Tyler Haney has pioneered the DTC fitness model, and made it cool to not only document your workouts, but also live in your clothes. Three years later, I still reach for the OV matching set I own. The quality has stood the test of sign—no visible sign of wear, even though I’ve worn it at least once a week for a year. This  SeamlessRib One Shoulder Bra ($48) and leggings ($78) look just as reliable and stylish. The pop of blue will surely catch the eyes, but there are plenty of colorways to choose from.
